I have always been an avid reader. In sixth form, as part of an English Literature A-level class, I was asked to stand in front of the class and read a poem out loud. The poem was T.S. Elliot’s ‘The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ and to this day it remains one my favourite pieces of writing. Heavily influenced by Dante and continuously referencing Shakespeare, the poem’s language has an almost hypnotic quality.

Dot woke up at 1am tonight, wheezing and coughing. After the obligatory inhaler ritual, I kissed her forehead until she fell asleep on my bed. Having the night to myself, I’ve spent the last few hours listening to different recordings of Prufrock and losing myself in the music of the words. I’ll leave you with two of them, one by Elliot himself and one by Anthony Hopkins:

So tonight I am grateful for time. And stillness. And great writing.
